AMD has officially inaugurated its new 209,000-square-foot office and engineering lab at GBS by the Sea, Bayan Lepas, marking a significant expansion of its R&D and global business services footprint in Malaysia.
Designed to accommodate over 1,200 employees, the facility features open workspaces and cutting-edge engineering labs dedicated to advancing semiconductor design and innovation.
The launch ceremony was officiated by YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, alongside Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, CEO of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Keivan Keshvari, Senior Vice President of Global Operations at AMD, and Chuang-Li Khoo, Penang Site Lead at AMD.
A Milestone in a Five-Decade Partnership

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow hailed the expansion as a testament to Penang’s position as a thriving investment hub for frontier technologies, including artificial intelligence.
“As AMD celebrates over five decades in Penang, this milestone underscores the state’s ability to attract and sustain world-class technology leaders,” he said. “We remain committed to supporting forward-looking investors like AMD in transformative fields.”
MIDA CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim highlighted the evolution of AMD’s role in Malaysia—from its early manufacturing operations to its current high-value R&D and IC design capabilities.
“This expansion aligns with Malaysia’s National Semiconductor Strategy and New Industrial Master Plan 2030, creating high-quality jobs while fostering a dynamic ecosystem for local talent and industry partners,” he said.
Driving the Next Generation of Computing Solutions
AMD’s Keivan Keshvari emphasised the facility’s role in developing next-gen high-performance, adaptive, and AI computing solutions across AMD’s portfolio.
“This advanced office reinforces AMD’s long-term commitment to Malaysia and will support the nation’s continued growth as a hub for technological innovation,” he said.
Penang Site Lead Chuang-Li Khoo reflected on AMD’s journey since 2002, when it first established its Accounting and Finance Service operations in Penang.
“Today’s inauguration marks a new chapter, expanding our capabilities in both global business services and engineering,” Khoo said. “This world-class workspace is designed to help our teams collaborate, innovate, and deliver exceptional solutions.”
Boosting Malaysia’s Semiconductor Competitiveness
With its expanded presence, AMD aims to contribute meaningfully to Malaysia’s semiconductor ecosystem, leveraging local expertise and fostering innovation partnerships. The new facility is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Malaysia’s position in the global semiconductor value chain.
