How Samsung Made the Galaxy Z Fold8 the World’s Lightest Foldable at 201 Grams

Samsung has continued to push the limits of foldable smartphone design, and with the Galaxy Z Fold8, the company has achieved one of its biggest milestones yet — a weight of just 201 grams, making it the world’s lightest book-style foldable according to Samsung’s internal research.

The journey started with the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, which weighed 276 grams. Samsung later reduced the weight to 253 grams with the Galaxy Z Fold5 and 239 grams with the Galaxy Z Fold6. The Galaxy Z Fold7 then reached 215 grams, setting the stage for the latest generation.

For the Galaxy Z Fold8, Samsung wanted to go even further while retaining the large display, battery life, camera capabilities and durability expected from a flagship foldable. Achieving this required changes across the entire device rather than simply reducing the size of individual components.

One major area of development is the foldable display. Galaxy Z Fold8 uses Flex Titanium technology, which incorporates a Titanium Alloy Film measuring only a few tens of micrometers thick — roughly one-third the width of a human hair. The supporting metal plate can also be precision-machined to around 0.2mm, with some sections as thin as 0.15mm.

Samsung also refined the hinge design to better manage the forces created during repeated folding and unfolding while balancing strength, durability, internal space and weight.

Materials play another important role. The company uses Advanced Armor Aluminum for the exterior and improved graphite structures for thermal management. Samsung also uses Clad Metal internally, combining different metals to reduce weight while maintaining the required strength and thermal performance.

Perhaps more importantly, Samsung reviewed almost every component inside the phone. Engineers examined approximately 270 components and more than 180 types of auxiliary parts, looking for opportunities to reduce weight and improve internal space. Some parts were eliminated completely, while others were redesigned down to differences of just 0.001 grams.

This approach also helped Samsung create room for more hardware. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, for example, maintains a 215-gram weight similar to the Galaxy Z Fold7 while increasing battery capacity from 4,400mAh to 5,000mAh. It also features a larger graphite heat-dissipation layer and introduces a 200MP main camera and 50MP ultra-wide camera.

For Samsung, the achievement is therefore about more than simply making a lighter phone. The company says the weight and space saved through engineering improvements can be redirected towards features users actually notice, including larger batteries, improved cameras and better thermal management.

In Malaysia, the Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at RM7,299, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra starts at RM8,099. The Galaxy Z Flip8 starts at RM5,399.

The Galaxy Z Fold8’s 201-gram design represents the result of eight generations of foldable development, with Samsung reworking everything from display materials and hinges to the smallest internal components to make its flagship foldable thinner, lighter and easier to carry.
