TikTok has released its Malaysia Socioeconomic Impact Report 2025, revealing that the platform contributed approximately RM20 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the country’s digital economy, representing around 4% of Malaysia’s total digital economy output.

Developed in collaboration with consulting firm Kearney, the report also found that TikTok’s ecosystem supported around 147,000 jobs nationwide, spanning creators, sellers, and businesses using TikTok, TikTok Shop, and TikTok LIVE.

The report highlights how the platform has evolved beyond entertainment into a digital economic driver, enabling entrepreneurship, supporting MSMEs, and creating new income opportunities through content creation, livestream commerce, and online retail.

Supporting Malaysia’s Digital Economy Goals

The report was officiated by Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, Malaysia’s Minister of Economy, and aligns with national initiatives such as MYDIGITAL, the National E-Commerce Strategic Roadmap (NESR), and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP). These frameworks position digital content and creative industries as key drivers of Malaysia’s future digital economy.

Opportunities for Businesses and Creators

According to the findings, TikTok Shop hosts about 1.8 million local businesses in Malaysia, with over 100,000 MSMEs trained through programmes conducted with government partners.

Among surveyed businesses:

  • 97% view TikTok as an important revenue source
  • 50% say the platform contributes over 40% of their total revenue
  • 72% cite the ability to reach new audiences as the main benefit

The report also found that 35% of surveyed creators are full-time content creators, while 45% earn above Malaysia’s minimum wage, showing how digital storytelling and livestream commerce are becoming viable career paths.

Overall, the report highlights how digital platforms are helping Malaysians generate income, grow businesses, and participate more actively in the country’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
