Samsung Electronics has announced that the quantum dot (QD) sheet used in its QD TVs has been certified cadmium-free by the global certification body Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS). This certification also confirms compliance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.

SGS Certification and RoHS Compliance

SGS, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is renowned for ensuring quality and safety standards across industries. By meeting SGS standards and adhering to the EU’s RoHS directive, Samsung guarantees a safe TV viewing experience without hazardous materials.

“Samsung’s quantum dot TVs are built on safe technology that complies with restrictions on hazardous substances while delivering unmatched picture quality,” said Taeyong Son, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Achieving SGS certification fully validates the safety of our products. With this recognition, we are committed to continuously developing sustainable display technologies.”

Pioneering Quantum Dot Innovation

Samsung began researching quantum dot technology in 2001 and developed no-cadmium quantum dot material in 2014. By 2015, the company launched TVs with this technology and has since secured around 150 patents. This achievement positions Samsung as a leader in safer quantum dot TVs made with eco-friendly materials.
