Team Terralnnovators from Johor, made up of three 15-year-old students, was declared the champion of the sixth edition of Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2024 (SFT), beating four finalist teams.

Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow initiative, “Start with Can,” in collaboration with Universiti Malaya, motivated Malaysian youths aged 13 to 15 to address local issues. The initiative pushed students to apply STEM skills to create new solutions that could help their communities. Over four months, 115 teams of over 300 students from around Malaysia competed to showcase the most innovative concepts.

Samsung Malaysia Electronics’ Chief Marketing Officer, Elaine Soh, commended the participating teams, highlighting that “Samsung Solve for Tomorrow is more than just a STEM competition; it’s a catalyst for innovation.” She expressed admiration for the young minds who are leveraging their STEM skills to address real-world issues. Soh emphasized that their commitment to building a sustainable future aligns perfectly with Samsung’s mission of driving positive change. She concluded by congratulating the winning teams, acknowledging them as the future leaders who embody the mindset needed to drive societal progress.

The SFT 2024 competition concluded on 7 December 2024 in Kuala Lumpur with an enthralling final event. All competing teams enthusiastically displayed their STEM-based creations, aiming for the top award. The finalists competed for Samsung’s prestigious prizes, and the following teams emerged successful with their outstanding projects:

First prize : Accessible Recycling – Eco Pulse by Team Terralnnovators from SMK Sultan Ismail
Team Terralnnovators from SMK Sultan Ismail won first place with their creative solution, Eco Pulse. This AI-powered picture recognition tool transforms recycling by precisely assessing the value and weight of recyclable materials. Eco Pulse improves the recycling process by combining modern data science and algorithms. The team’s innovative efforts were rewarded with Samsung products valued up to RM28,000.

Second prize : Animal Conservation – Elephant-Friendly Farm Alarm System by Team A Miso Soup from Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School
The Elephant-Friendly Farm Alarm System, an intriguing invention powered by Arduino or Raspberry Pi, uses motion sensors to detect the presence of elephants or intruders. This ingenious idea is crucial for protecting the endangered Borneo Pygmy Elephant. The team behind this pioneering initiative was awarded Samsung products worth up to RM24,000.

Third prize : Environmental Protection – Bioethanol from Cassava Roots by Team Eagle Young Innovators from St. John’s Institution Kuala Lumpur
Bioethanol produced from cassava roots is an environmentally beneficial alternative to traditional cleaning, agriculture, and medicinal goods, promoting a healthier environment and better human health. They received Samsung products totaling up to RM19,000.

Fourth prize : Renewable Energy – Piezoelectric Tiles by Team The Visionaries from Vision Secondary School Tawau
Piezoelectric Tiles harness piezoelectricity to generate clean energy from the kinetic energy of moving vehicles. They were awarded RM6,000 worth up to Samsung products.

Fifth prize : Waste Reduction – Biodegradable Membrane by Team Renew Shield from SMK Sungai Tapang
The biodegradable membrane is made from eco-friendly kitchen ingredients and natural wax, designed to reduce waste and promote sustainability. They received Samsung products worth up to RM3,000.

Through the SFT competition, Samsung Malaysia Electronics has committed to cultivating innovation and developing future STEM leaders. Universiti Malaya’s collaboration has been crucial in guiding and motivating these young talents. Together, they are continuing to empower Malaysia’s future generation of leaders.
