In a milestone year celebrating the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations, Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd has been honored with a special recognition award by the National Tech Association of Malaysia (PIKOM). This accolade was presented at the prestigious PIKOM LEAD 2024 Summit, acknowledging Huawei’s substantial contributions to Malaysia’s technological innovation, ecosystem growth, and digital transformation over the past two decades.
Pioneering Innovation and Collaboration
Huawei Malaysia’s Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications, Mr. Oliver Liu, accepted the award from Digital Minister YB Gobind Singh Deo during the summit. The recognition underscores Huawei’s pivotal role in advancing smart city solutions, connectivity infrastructure, green technology, and digital talent development. Collaborating with government bodies, academic institutions, and private sector players, Huawei has been instrumental in Malaysia’s push to establish itself as the ASEAN Digital Capital—a mission closely tied to its chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.
PIKOM’s Praise for Huawei’s Local Impact
PIKOM Chairman Ong Chin Seong lauded Huawei as a model multinational corporation (MNC) that has deeply integrated into Malaysia’s tech ecosystem. He noted Huawei’s impactful initiatives, such as its partnership with MCMC on the Digital Leadership Excellence (DLE) programme and its support for digital skills development across the nation.
“Over the last 20 years, Huawei has invested significantly in Malaysia—not just in employment but in fostering partnerships across the tech ecosystem. Programmes like the DLE empower leaders to adopt transformative technologies, while Huawei’s continuous collaboration with stakeholders showcases its dedication to Malaysia’s digital progress,” said Mr. Ong.
Empowering Malaysia’s Digital Ambitions
With a presence in Malaysia for 23 years, Huawei employs nearly 4,000 people locally, 80% of whom are Malaysians. The company’s Malaysia Global Training Centre in Cyberjaya, its only global training facility outside China, highlights its commitment to cultivating regional digital talent. To date, Huawei has trained over 54,000 individuals in digital skills, surpassing its target of 50,000 by 2025. Through its Huawei ASEAN Academy and 40 ICT Academies established nationwide, the company continues to address talent gaps in emerging fields like AI, 5G, and quantum computing.
In alignment with national initiatives like JENDELA and Sarawak’s telecommunication tower project, Huawei is also working to bridge the digital divide by expanding access to underserved areas.
A Vision for Sustainable Progress
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Mr. Oliver Liu said, “This award reflects our unwavering commitment to empowering businesses, creating value for communities, and supporting Malaysia’s digital ambitions. We are inspired to work harder with our local partners to build an ecosystem that not only positions Malaysia as a regional tech leader but also ensures sustainable progress for future generations.”
Highlighting Transformative Technologies at PIKOM LEAD 2024
The PIKOM LEAD 2024 Summit gathered over 500 delegates, including policymakers, tech innovators, and industry leaders, to discuss the transformative potential of AI, 5G, and quantum computing.
