Samsung Achieves World-First Breakthrough in Fainting Prediction Using Galaxy Watch
Samsung Electronics has announced a major advancement in wearable health technology after a joint clinical study with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital successfully demonstrated the ability to predict fainting episodes using the Samsung Galaxy Watch6.
The study focused on vasovagal syncope (VVS), a condition where sudden drops in heart rate and blood pressure can cause temporary loss of consciousness, often triggered by stress or other factors. Although fainting itself is usually not life-threatening, unexpected falls can lead to serious injuries such as fractures or concussions.
Led by Professor Junhwan Cho, the research team evaluated 132 patients with suspected VVS symptoms during induced fainting tests. Using biosignal data collected from the Galaxy Watch6’s photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, researchers analyzed heart rate variability (HRV) patterns with an AI-powered algorithm.
The results showed that the system was able to predict fainting episodes up to five minutes in advance with 84.6% accuracy, including a clinically meaningful sensitivity rate of 90%.
According to Samsung, the findings represent the world’s first successful demonstration of a commercial smartwatch being used for early fainting prediction, marking an important step toward real-time wearable warning systems that could help users move to safer positions or seek assistance before losing consciousness.
Jongmin Choi said the research highlights how wearable technology is evolving from post-care monitoring into preventive healthcare solutions that can support healthier daily lives.
The study findings were published in European Heart Journal – Digital Health, further strengthening Samsung’s ambitions in digital healthcare and AI-powered wellness technologies.
