Xiaomi highlights durability, battery longevity and long-term support as smartphone users increasingly keep their devices for longer

As Malaysian consumers become more conscious about the value and lifespan of their smartphones, Xiaomi is placing greater emphasis on long-term reliability with its upcoming REDMI Note 17 Series.

The company says modern smartphones are increasingly expected to serve users for several years, making factors such as battery health, durability, software support and consistent performance just as important as specifications and design.

More Than 5.3 Million REDMI Note Shipments in Malaysia

The REDMI Note Series has been a major part of Xiaomi’s smartphone strategy in Malaysia since its debut locally in 2014. The first generation reportedly sold out within just 57 seconds.

Since then, the series has introduced features such as dual AI cameras, high-speed 120W HyperCharge and improved durability, while more than 5.3 million units have been shipped to Malaysian users.

Xiaomi says the evolution of REDMI Note has largely been driven by changing consumer needs. Earlier generations focused on larger displays, better build quality and bigger batteries, while later models introduced stronger durability and water resistance.

The REDMI Note 7, for example, introduced an 18-month warranty in 2019, while the REDMI Note 13 Series brought IP68 water and dust resistance to the mid-range segment.

REDMI Note 17 Series: Built for Years

With the upcoming REDMI Note 17 Series, Xiaomi is taking this approach further under its “Built for Years” philosophy.

The company says the new generation is designed around a six-year commitment covering areas such as battery longevity, security updates and sustained performance, although specific coverage will vary depending on the model and market.

The series will also feature TÜV SÜD certifications covering battery performance, drop resistance and water resistance.

One of the key upgrades is expected to be Xiaomi’s largest smartphone battery to date, using silicon-carbon battery technology.

The new battery is rated for up to 1,600 charging cycles while retaining more than 80% capacity, with the system designed to balance long-term endurance, charging performance and safety.

Designed to Survive Everyday Accidents

Durability is another major focus of the REDMI Note 17 Series.

Xiaomi says the device incorporates 17 customised waterproof components and undergoes 10 airtightness tests to improve protection against water exposure.

The phone is also certified for 3-metre drop resistance, providing additional protection against common accidents such as drops, knocks and everyday mishandling.

The goal is to ensure the smartphone remains dependable not only when it is new, but throughout years of regular use.

Why Smartphone Longevity Matters

As consumers extend their smartphone replacement cycles, long-term reliability is becoming increasingly important, particularly in the mid-range segment.

Rather than focusing solely on performance at launch, Xiaomi believes a smartphone should continue delivering a dependable experience years after purchase.

The REDMI Note 17 Series represents the company’s latest attempt to achieve this by combining a long-lasting battery, improved physical durability and extended support.

The upcoming series will also introduce the first REDMI Note Pro Max model, which Xiaomi says will focus on delivering its highest level of design, quality and overall experience within the REDMI Note family.

With its “Built for Years” strategy, Xiaomi is positioning the REDMI Note 17 Series as a smartphone range designed not simply to perform well on day one, but to remain a reliable everyday companion for years to come.
