Samsung Electronics introduced the SSD 990 EVO, the latest addition to its range of consumer SSDs. This NVMe SSD promises powerful performance alongside improved energy efficiency, catering to a diverse array of users and their everyday computing needs.
Hangu Sohn, Vice President of Memory Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation and practicality in optimizing SSD solutions. “The 990 EVO balances performance, power efficiency, and reliability,” Sohn stated, “making it a versatile choice for various tasks, including gaming, business workflows, and creative endeavors.”
Enhanced Performance
The SSD 990 EVO boasts significant performance improvements over its predecessor, the 970 EVO Plus, with up to 43% faster speeds. Sequential read speeds reach 5,000 megabytes per second (MB/s), and write speeds up to 4,200 MB/s. Random read and write speeds have also received a boost, reaching up to 700K and 800K input/output operations per second (IOPS), respectively.
Utilizing Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology, the SSD achieves optimized performance even without a DRAM interface. This means users upgrading from previous mainstream SSDs will enjoy faster loading times for games and rapid access to large files.
Improved Power Efficiency and Thermal Management
Compared to the 970 EVO Plus, the Samsung 990 EVO offers up to 70% improved power efficiency, ensuring extended usage on PCs without compromising battery life. It supports Modern Standby, enabling instant on/off functionality with uninterrupted internet connectivity and seamless notification reception, even in low-power states.
With its heat spreader label, the SSD regulates the thermal conditions of the NAND chip effectively, allowing operations to run consistently at peak performance levels without compromising drive integrity.

The SSD 990 EVO is designed to meet both current computing demands and anticipated future requirements.
