The FE 20-70mm F4 G (model SEL2070G) from Sony, which offers an ultra-wide 20-70 mm zoom range in a wonderfully compact, lightweight full-frame lens with a constant F4 aperture throughout the zoom range, is revolutionising the usual zoom category of lenses. This new lens is made for a wide range of producers thanks to its exceptional G Lens™ image quality, high speed accuracy and tracking AF, and clever design for optimal mobility and operability. The FE 20-70mm F4 G is the ideal option for capturing a variety of content, from still photos of people and landscapes to vlogging and movie production.

Compact and lightweight new standard zoom covers ultra-wide 20-70 mm
Thanks to Sony’s latest lens design and XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors technology, the FE 20-70mm F4 G offers outstanding optical performance in a remarkably compact, lightweight lens with an unprecedented ultra-wide 20 mm to 70 mm zoom range and constant F4 aperture. When combined with a compact mirrorless body, this lens can produce excellent image quality in almost any situation and at all focal lengths. An excellent option for shooting with minimal equipment.
Furthermore, the ultra-wide 20 mm end of the zoom range allows for a wide field of view when shooting video with a 16:9 or 2.35:1 aspect ratio.
Outstanding image quality consistent with the G Lens logo
The new FE 20-70mm F4 G delivers stunning image quality and stunning bokeh, both of which are in keeping with the G Lens logo.
The new lens, which uses the newest technology from Sony, promises distinct G Lens image quality in a surprisingly small and light lens. This lens’s cutting-edge optical design, which includes two AA (advanced aspherical) elements, one aspherical element, three ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, and one ED aspherical element, simultaneously corrects chromatic and spherical aberration for exceptionally high optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. This superb optical design is enhanced by optimised coatings that provide great flare and ghost resistance for exceptional contrast and clarity.
Full-frame image sensors enable stunning bokeh, which is further improved with a 9-blade circular aperture and finely calculated spherical aberration. All of this encourages the creation of striking, enduring imagery.
The FE 20-70mm F4 G’s short minimum focusing distance allows you to easily manoeuvre around subjects like small flowers to find the best angle (0.3 metres at the wide end and 0.25 metres at the telephoto end of the zoom range when using AF). Maximum magnification is 0.39x for dynamic, detailed close-ups.
Maximises camera AF performance for stills and video
Two of Sony’s most recent XD Linear Motors are used to power the focus group of the lens, giving tremendous thrust for quick, silent, low-vibration focus drive. Up to 60% more AF speed is achievable thanks to significant improvements in thrust efficiency over earlier models. Moving subjects are also followed reliably and precisely thanks to a roughly 2-fold boost in tracking performance over earlier models. The Alpha™ body can smoothly record video when shooting at a high frame rate, and it can reliably track moving subjects when taking continuous still pictures at up to 30 frames per second.
Video performance designed for refined imagery
The FE 20-70mm F4 G incorporates cutting-edge lens technology to reduce focus breathing as well as focus and axial shift when zooming, resulting in high-quality images. With advanced XD linear motors and a newly developed aperture unit that dramatically reduces noise and vibration, this lens has also been carefully designed for quiet operation when shooting movies.
The Active Mode image stabilisation on Alpha™ series cameras is extremely effective at the ultra-wide 20 mm end of the FE 20-70mm F4 G zoom range, providing excellent image stabilisation performance while maintaining a wide angle of view. This is especially useful for capturing smooth, stable handheld footage while walking.
When shooting high-resolution 4K or 8K movies, focus is especially important. Thanks to two high-thrust XD Linear Motors and a high-level control system in a compact, lightweight lens, the FE 20-70mm F4 G works with Alpha™ series camera bodies to easily acquire accurate focus and smoothly track fast-moving subjects. When shooting solo, the ability to leave focusing to the camera can be a huge advantage.
When focusing manually, Linear Response MF makes sure that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to small adjustments. An independent aperture ring provides direct, simple aperture control.
High-level operability and reliability for any environment
The independent focus, zoom, and aperture rings of the new FE 20-70mm F4 G have been optimised for diameter, width, and location for complete control while taking still photos as well as for optimum adaptability when filming videos.
A focus mode switch on the side of the lens allows you to swiftly switch between autofocus and manual focus to adapt to shifting shooting conditions. Customisable focus hold buttons are offered in two locations for simple access and convenient control. Despite being ultra wide-angle, the lens is compatible with circular polarising filters all the way to the edge of the lens, giving the user complete artistic freedom. It also has an Iris Lock switch to stop unauthorised adjustments while shooting.
The front lens element of the FE 20-70mm F4 G also includes a fluorine coating that deters fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants. Finally, the FE 20-70mm F4 G has a dust and moisture resistant design.
Availability
The new FE 20-70mm F4 G will be available in selected countries in Asia Pacific from February 2023.
