Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that it has reached a key milestone in its journey to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, by donating more than USD10 million to the United Nations Development Programmee (UNDP). The funds were raised through the Samsung Global Goals app and will be used to help UNDP develop resilience and accelerate progress worldwide.

The Global Goals, which were established by the United Nations in 2015, offer a common roadmap of ambitious standards for a more equal, fair, and sustainable world by 2030. In order to address inequality, climate change, ecological degradation, education, and other urgent global concerns, the 17 Global Goals encourage cooperation and team effort. In 2019, Samsung launched the Samsung Global Goals app in collaboration with UNDP as part of its initiative to develop cutting-edge solutions in support of the Global Goals. Since then, the company’s worldwide Galaxy community has joined the effort by using the app as a straightforward yet significant tool to improve their everyday lives.

Taking Collective Action for the Goals

“At Samsung, we know technology plays a crucial role in solving some of the biggest challenges the world is facing right now,”
“Through our partnership with UNDP and the Samsung Global Goals app, the Galaxy community has been instrumental in advancing the Global Goals. We want to extend our gratitude to our users for making this incredible milestone possible.”

The effective work of UNDP is aided by the actions taken on the Samsung Global Goals app. Achieving the SDGs requires actively involving youth. In addition to supporting more than 900 youth partnerships, UNDP implements policies, promotes programmes, and supports young initiatives in more than 100 countries.

“As we approach the halfway point of the 2030 deadline, this coming year is crucial in our pursuit to advance the Global Goals,” said UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner. “While the world has faced recent setbacks, we are energized by the progress made through this partnership. Together with Samsung we must reinvigorate our combined efforts to achieve the Goals and inspire the next generation to take action with us.”

Scaling Impact

Nearly 300 million Galaxy devices, including smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches, have the Samsung Global Goals app loaded. Samsung uses the app to promote awareness about the Global Goals while also encouraging users to take small acts that add up to great change. Users of the Samsung Global Goals app can donate directly, utilise wallpapers to improve ad earnings, or create funds by viewing advertisements in the app. Samsung matches all earnings from in-app adverts to enhance effect.

Since introducing the Samsung Global Goals app in 2019, Samsung has expanded its collaboration with UNDP with Generation17, a project that raises the voices of 14 young leaders who are making a difference in their communities throughout the world. Generation17 Young Leaders are critical in encouraging individuals to have an impact on Global Goals.

Through its commercial activities, Samsung also works to promote the Global Goals. To establish business priorities and convey performance in accordance with the Goals, the company has aligned its corporate ESG strategy with the Global Goals. In addition, the company has signed the United Nations Global Compact, an effort that encourages businesses to implement sustainable and socially responsible policies.
