Spotify today announced the top artists, albums, songs, playlists, and podcasts that represent the colourful kaleidoscope of more than 456 million listeners worldwide. Spotify customers may also access their personalised Wrapped experience, which includes the most recent features that honour how they soundtracked their year.
Globally, Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, and Drake topped the Wrapped lists across most-streamed album, track and artist. For the third year in a row, Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny took the number one spot for most-streamed artist globally, with more than 18.5 billion streams this year.
Closer to home, here’s how Malaysia listened this year.
Taylor Swift came in first on the list of Malaysia’s Top Artists this year, followed by global phenomenon BTS, who also maintained first place for Top Groups for the third consecutive year and clinched Top Album with Proof. Signalling a K-pop wave sweeping through the local music scene, the boy band was accompanied by BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN and TWICE who claimed second, third and fourth most-streamed group. Meanwhile, Justin Bieber took the first spotfor Top Male Artist, with Justice in the third for Top Album in Malaysia.
Malaysians are into fresh finds, with new artists securing the top spots for Malaysia’s Most Streamed Songs. This year, Japanese lofi hip-hop extraordinaire Joji’sGlimpse of Us came up top, followed by Australian singer-songwriter Troye Sivan’sAngel Baby.
Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza retained her throne as Malaysia’s Top Local Artistwith Malaysians not getting enough of her. It is also the year for Insomniacks as they snagged the top spot for both Malaysia’s Top Local Song with Sempurna, as well as Malaysia’s Top Local Group.
The Top Spotify Playlists spanned a wide array of music genres, reflecting Malaysia’s rich variety of listening tastes. To stay on top of the latest in international music, local listeners turned to ‘Hot Hits Malaysia’, ‘Today’s Top Hits’ and ‘Mega Hit Mix’ playlists which placed first, third and fifth respectively. Second was ‘Carta Malaysia 50’ rounding rising local talents. Climbing to fourth from fifth place was the freshly revamped ‘K-Pop ON! (온)’ playlist.
Starting immediately, eligible consumers may also receive their personalised 2022 Wrapped experience solely through the new Spotify mobile app (iOS and Android). Here’s what to look out for:
- New Data Stories to Express Your Year in Audio: In addition to your top artists, genres, songs, podcasts and minutes listened, Your Listening Personality is a new feature that not only tells you about the music you listen to but what that says about your music taste. We’ll tell you which of 16 different Spotify-created Listening Personality types you are, based on your 2022 listening trends. Additionally, Audio Day is an interactive story that gives you a peek into how your music taste evolves throughout the day.
- Share More: Fans can now share their Wrapped cards on WhatsApp and Line, along with custom Wrapped-themed GIFs. Snapchat users can unlock a personalised lens that reflects their Listening Personality and enjoy special Wrapped-themed apparel for Bitmojis
- Connecting artists and creators even further: In addition to personalised and editorial playlists, the Wrapped hub on platform will also feature merch from your top artists, along with upcoming events to help fans experience their top artists live.
- Your Artist Messages: This year, we’ve expanded to include messages from more than 40,000 artists like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Måneskin and more. With Your Artist Messages, eligible fans will get a personalised video feed with thank you messages from some of their top artists in 2022, with each video followed up by your most listened song from that artist this year.
- Taking Wrapped into Roblox: To celebrate Wrapped and the artists that soundtracked the year, we’ll be taking over the Spotify Island mainland with Wrapped-inspired quests, games, virtual merch, and photo booth opportunities with 12 different artists including: Bizarrap, Black Sherif, CRO, Doechii, Eslabon Armado, Miranda Lambert, NIKI, Stray Kids, SUNMI and Tove Lo.
- Spotify Camp Nou Takeover: As a part of the first-of-its-kind partnership between Spotify and FC Barcelona, fans can also find 2022 Wrapped videos on social from some of their favourite players, including Robert Lewandowski, Alexia Putellas, Pedri, and Ansu Fati.
