Xiaomi today unveiled its advanced foldable flagship smartphone, Xiaomi MIX Fold 2, at a new product launch event in Mainland China, alongside Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s Founder, Chairman, and CEO’s highly anticipated annual speech.
The Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 represents a significant technological advancement in the ultra-slim foldable smartphone market. With a folded size of just 5.4mm1, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 provides a consistent viewing experience on both its inner and outer displays. With the latest Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 mobile platform, it also provides an authentic Leica imagery experience and exceptional power efficiency.
Along with the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2, Xiaomi also unveiled the Xiaomi Pad 5 Pro, Redmi K50 Ultra, and a slew of ecosystem products.
Self-developed Micro Waterdrop Hinge
Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 has a ground-breaking design. It is one of the thinnest foldable smartphones on the market, with a folded body measuring just 11.2mm¹, significantly thinner than many other foldable devices. Both edges are only 5.4mm1 when unfolded, providing a pleasant in-hand feel.
Xiaomi focused on refining the hinge – the core component of the foldable smartphone – to achieve these form factor breakthroughs. Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 includes a self-developed Micro Waterdrop Hinge with a smaller bending radius, thinner screen modules, a customised mini rotating hinge, and a carbon fibre double-wing floating panel created using an integrated solder-free precision process. These highly integrated components, when combined, reduced the number of parts to 87, allowing for a lighter and thinner hinge design than ever before.
Furthermore, both sides of the hinge employ space stacking technology and large hidden spaces on both sides of the hinge for soft boards, resulting in a 20% increase in space utilisation and the 5.4mm1 flat design with balanced weight distribution.
Two displays, one exceptional viewing experience
Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 features an inner folding design with two AMOLED flagship screens of varying sizes on each side. The outer display has a 21:9 classic ratio design, which allows for excellent compatibility with most applications while also taking into account user experience when handling. The 6.56″ display has Samsung E5 material, a resolution of 2520×1080, and supports 120Hz high refresh rate and P3 colour gamut, with a brightness of up to 1000nit which giving it an advantage over other common displays due to its excellent user experience.
The Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 has an 8.02″ Samsung Eco2 OLED display on the inside. It employs POL-LESS technology, which replaces the traditional polarizer with an ultra-thin colour filter and employs a black matrix material to reduce screen reflection. Light transmittance has increased by 33% compared to traditional displays, while power consumption has decreased by 25%. This display has a resolution of 2160×1914, P3 colour gamut support, and LTPO 2.0 1-120Hz AdaptiveSync Pro. The display’s ultra-low anti-AR film reduces reflectivity to less than 2%, resulting in a more detailed viewing experience and pleasing aesthetics.
Both displays provide an exceptional user experience, with 120Hz refresh rates, professional screen calibration on primary colours, 1,000nit brightness, and Dolby Vision support. The device supports dual ambient light sensing on the front and back, allowing for natural and smooth automatic brightness adjustment regardless of which screen is used.
MIUI Fold 13, the new standard for foldable displays
The Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 is powered by the latest MIUI Fold 13 operating system. It was created as a permutation of the classic MIUI interface, and it is perfectly suited to the foldable form factor, with screen interaction optimizations offering improvements in user experience.
The smart screen desktop design adapts to the foldable display and doubles the smartphone’s viewing area. In addition to maintaining visual consistency, it enables the use of the hundreds of available MIUI widgets without distortion, improving both aesthetics and usability.
Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 system applications have been optimised for the large screen, and many app interfaces have been redesigned for a better on-screen experience. To take full advantage of the large screen, calendar, file management, voice recorder, notes, and other applications use a new column design. Third-party application adaptation will be carried out in accordance with Android 12L solutions, which will provide more native support capability for third-party apps.
Other Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 innovations include improvements to smart screen interaction. Users can now split the screen with three finger swipes. The sidebar, which can also be used to exit split screen mode, provides quick access to floating windows. The appearance of floating windows and notifications has also been improved, and multitasking on a smartphone has never been easier.
Authentic Leica Imagery, dual-quality approach
Xiaomi has established a new imaging standard for smartphone photography by combining Leica’s imaging expertise with Xiaomi’s extensive experience in computational photography.
To ensure optical excellence, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 features a 50-megapixel IMX766 main camera with 7P lenses that all feature ALD low-reflection coating. A 13MP ultra-wide angle camera and an 8MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and portrait capabilities are also included.
In addition to the Leica-certified Summicron lens, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 includes two photographic styles: “Leica Authentic Look” and “Leica Vibrant Look,” both of which give the photographer more creative freedom.
Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 has fast camera startup, quick captures, and continuous shooting support up to 30 frames per second thanks to Xiaomi ProFocus.
In terms of video, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 supports both Dolby Vision HDR recording and Dolby Atmos video viewing. Videos shot on the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 will look fantastic, especially when used with UGC platforms that support Dolby Vision, allowing users to share stunning visuals online.
Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 and flagship performance packed in an ultra-slim body
In addition to its groundbreaking thin and light foldable screen design, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 features the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 mobile platform for responsive performance. The 4nm manufacturing process developed by TSMC allows for a significant increase in energy efficiency while packing tens of billions of transistors into an area the size of a fingernail. The advanced process allows for a 10% increase in CPU and GPU performance while reducing CPU and GPU energy consumption by 30%. This improved design enables the ultra-slim smartphone to maintain both higher speeds and efficiency.
Excellent power efficiency allows for a long-lasting battery, with a full day of use possible even when the inner screen is frequently used, and extended use when the outer display is primarily used.
Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 also includes a cooling system with a large-area VC, which is uncommon on foldable smartphones. The high-quality VC has a surface area of up to 2,520mm2, allowing for a 50% improvement in thermal conductivity over standard VCs. The inner layer of the battery is covered with a 3715mm2 area of second-generation boron nitride heat dissipation film. Finally, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2’s excellent sustained performance is supported by a multi-layer high-density graphite sheet.
