In a major boost for Malaysia’s digital talent pool, the Huawei ICT Competition Malaysia 2024–2025 awards ceremony honored the nation’s rising stars in digital innovation. The event celebrated the achievements of 16 exceptional students and instructors who emerged as grand prize winners across four tracks: Cloud, Network, Computing, and Innovation.
Over 1,200 participants from 40 public and private universities nationwide competed in this year’s challenge. The awards ceremony, co-organized by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and Huawei Technologies (Malaysia), underscored the importance of cultivating digital talent to drive Malaysia’s digital transformation.
Grand Prize Winners by Track
- Innovation Track
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) claimed the grand prize with instructor Chong Yung Wey and students Lim Miin Ning, Naomi Tham Kah Mun, and Bok Wei Hong.
“This victory demonstrates USM’s commitment to fostering innovative minds and reinforcing our position as a leader in technological advancement,” said USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed. - Cloud Track
Universiti Malaya (UM) triumphed with instructor Dr Rafidah Binti Md Noor and students Chew Ying Ying, Lee Xim Er, and Cheu Zi Yuan.
“This grand prize symbolizes the boundless possibilities of ICT. Thank you, Huawei ICT Academy, for this incredible opportunity!” said Dr Rafidah. - Network Track
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) earned the grand prize under instructor Ahmad Alauddin Ariffin and students Nurul Natasha Nabilah Binti Mohd Dino, Nur A’in A’liya Binti Ahmad Alauddin, and Anis Nadira Noor Maisam.
“This achievement is even more meaningful as it’s my second year in the competition. I’m excited and ready to tackle the Regional Stage next,” shared Nurul Natasha. - Computing Track
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR Kampar) secured the grand prize with instructor Dr Aun Yichiet and students Liew Zheng Xian, Ng Shi Qi, and Har Sze Hao.
“This win is a testament to the power of teamwork, grit, and Huawei’s incredible support for talent development,” said Dr Aun.
Recognizing Educators and Institutions
Six instructors were honored as Huawei Malaysia Most Dedicated Instructors 2024 for their contributions to ICT talent development:
- Dr Lee Sui Ping (Xiamen University Malaysia)
- Dr Ng Kok Why and Dr Lee Fong Yee (Multimedia University)
- Dr Tan Soo Fun (Universiti Malaysia Sabah)
- Dr Noorhayati Md Noor and Dr Azliza Binti Mohd Ali (Universiti Teknologi MARA).
Six universities were named Huawei Malaysia Outstanding ICT Academies 2024 for their excellence in advancing ICT education:
- Universiti Malaysia Sabah
- Multimedia University
- Universiti Malaya
- Xiamen University Malaysia
- Universiti Teknologi MARA
- INTI International College Penang
A Vision for the Future
The grand prize winners will compete in the regional stage next February, showcasing Malaysia’s talent on a broader platform.
UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Hj Mansur, emphasized Huawei’s alignment with UMS’s mission to cultivate skilled leaders and accelerate digital transformation.
The event also featured a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) exchange between MOHE and Huawei Malaysia to enhance collaboration in emerging technologies, real-world expertise, and access to cutting-edge resources.
Earlier in the day, the Digital Talent Forum Day 2024 brought together over 100 instructors from 30 universities and industry leaders to discuss strategies for advancing digital education.
