The iconic Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTiC) will be transformed once again as TERANG 2024 lights up Kuala Lumpur from October 11th to 20th, 2024, between 8:00 pm and 11:00 pm. Returning for its second edition, the 9-day exhibition will feature 34 competitive projection mapping showcases, each 1 to 1.5 minutes long, exploring the theme “Cultural Futurism.”

Set against the city’s historic colonial architecture, TERANG 2024 invites audiences on an immersive visual journey that blends Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage with futuristic elements. The event showcases how tradition and modern innovation intersect to shape Malaysia’s cultural future.

TERANG, derived from the Malay word for “bright,” is an initiative by Filamen, a platform focused on empowering new media artists. By hosting a projection mapping competition, the event encourages both international and local professional artists, as well as students, to present their works that breathe new life into heritage architecture, promoting interest in the preservation of these landmarks.

Showcasing Regional and Global Talent

This year’s exhibition features submissions from professional artists across Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and beyond. Lling Lling, representing Malaysia, collaborates with Brian Cha to present “Future Nature,” a piece juxtaposing natural and human-made environments. Zafree Azhar offers a dreamlike journey with “Halimunan: The Invisible Reverie,” while returning artist Lunartic Studio presents “Main-Main,” blending arcade gaming culture with Malaysian heritage. International artists like Ari Dykier from Poland and C.L.V.X from Indonesia add a global dimension to the event, showcasing works like “Perseverance” and “Legend of Bujang Senang.”

Students from prestigious institutions such as DASEIN Academy of Art, UiTM, and INTI International University will also present their creative takes on the theme, contributing to an even richer exhibition.

Expert Judging and Public Participation

TERANG 2024 entries will be judged by a panel of distinguished experts including Fasyali Fadzly from My Art Memory Project, Ady Setyawan, Director of the ITB Light Festival (Indonesia), and Michiyuki Ishita, Creative Director of the 1minute Projection Mapping Competition (Japan). Visitors can also participate by voting for the People’s Choice Award through QR codes at MaTiC.

Abdul Shakir, co-founder of Filamen and organiser of TERANG, expressed excitement for the increased support and enthusiasm this year, highlighting the event’s role in exploring how technology can shape the future of Malaysia’s cultural identity.

Extended Experience at Kreatif KL

The journey doesn’t end at MaTiC. From October 30th to November 3rd, TERANG 2024 will extend its experience to the Old High Court near Masjid Jamek as part of the Kreatif KL Festival. Visitors will be treated to award-winning works from TERANG 2023, continuing the celebration of cultural heritage through modern innovation.
