The ASUS Vivobook S16 OLED is one of the latest offering from ASUS that features AMD Ryzen 8000 series processor with Ryzen AI and built towards as a slim and portable laptop that can be carried anywhere.
Today we will quickly look at the ASUS Vivobook S16 OLED and measure the performance along with our verdict in this quick review along with some benchmark scores.
Design
The ASUS Vivobook S16 OLED is a full-sized, thin laptop that concentrates on a few main points. With an all-metal, black aluminum body that is 1.50KG in weight, it is lightweight and easy to carry on your bag. In my experience, I don’t really feel the weight when I’m carrying it with my bag, so we can see that there haven’t been many changes made to the base material used. Indeed, at just 15.9 mm thick, this laptop is probably no thicker than a book or novel. This allows it to fit easily into almost any folio or folder.
Typing on the keyboard is a breeze with its 1.7mm key travel and quiet, non-squeaky chiclet design with up to 7 key rollover. The CoPilot key is a handy addition, granting easy access to Copilot windows for AI or Chatgpt. Just remember, most CoPilot features need an internet connection. The RGB backlight on the keyboard allows for comfortable typing in dimly lit environments, and you can manage it through Windows settings. The touchpad is generously sized and responsive to gestures. Plus, there’s a full-size numpad on the right side for effortless number input.
In addition, the laptop features 2 USB C ports (with one being on USB 4.0) that support charging, data transfer, and connecting to an external display via USB hubs. It also includes two standard USB A ports, HDMI, MicroSD card slot, and a microphone/headphone combo jack for using various USB devices. Lastly, there is a 1080P privacy shutter webcam with Windows Hello support for unlocking the laptop using an IR sensor.
Display & Audio
The ASUS Vivobook S16 OLED boasts a 3200 x 2000 OLED display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and an 89% screen-to-body ratio. This aspect ratio is ideal for wider viewing, making it great for tasks like working on excel spreadsheets where you need to see more. The OLED display supports a rich 100% DCI-P3 color gamut and can achieve a peak brightness of 600nits. It also offers a 120Hz refresh rate with HDR, although it is worth noting that it is a glossy display, which may result in glare when used in bright environments or outdoors. Despite this, it remains a bright and impressive display that delivers a smooth viewing experience.
ASUS made sure to focus on the audio quality, with the stereo speakers positioned below the laptop delivering strong sound, good bass, and clear treble during our testing in a small room with strong vocal audio. You can customize the sound settings using the Dolby app and MyASUS app, which offer various environment modes tuned by Dolby Atmos and sound by Harmon/Kardon. The laptop is equipped with multi directional microphones, giving you the option to choose between default, focus on surrounding for group meetings, or self focus right in front of you with the laptop.
Performance, Hardware & Software
ASUS Vivobook S16 OLED utilizes the AMD Ryzen 8840HS APU with Radeon 780M RDNA3 graphics. As part of the Ryzen 8000 series, it boasts Ryzen AI with an integrated XDNA NPU for AI-related tasks. The laptop comes with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM at 7500Mhz and 512GB of internal storage, which is the only component that can be swapped or upgraded is the internal NVME storage.
It seems like there isn’t any unnecessary software installed, except for the basic Windows 11 setup, Microsoft Office 365, MyASUS App, and GlideX. MyASUS App acts as a central hub for monitoring and managing your laptop, offering features such as checking warranty information, system details, power settings, and audio configurations. GlideX enables users to mirror or expand their screen onto a mobile device, including phones, and also allows for file transfers.
Based on my own experience, the 75Wh battery can provide around 8 hours of usage for tasks like work, streaming, music, and browsing. Recharging with the 90W USB C adaptor takes about 2 hours to reach full charge. When it comes to gaming on the laptop, it’s a selective yes for games like Genshin Impact, Zenless Zone, TMNT, and SOTTR. The Radeon 780M graphics card can handle eSports and some AAA titles, just ensure to adjust your settings for optimal performance. If you are keen on some light video editing, this laptop can render and do the job well.
