Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a long-time Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner, has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) to enhance the viewing experience of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Utilizing the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung will capture unique footage, offering fans unprecedented access to the world’s top athletes during the Opening Ceremony on the Seine River and the sailing events.
As the Official Smartphone and Computing Equipment partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Samsung will leverage its cutting-edge mobile technology and 5G connectivity to provide a new perspective on these iconic events. This initiative supports Paris 2024’s goal of being the most open Games ever and continues Samsung’s tradition of technological innovation in support of the Olympics.
Enhancing Fan Engagement
Samsung plans to install over 200 Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones on the 85 athlete vessels participating in the Opening Ceremony, capturing high-definition HDR footage. This content will be streamed through a private 5G network by Orange, the official mobile network provider for Paris 2024. Orange will deploy more than a dozen 5G antennas along the Seine, creating France’s first standalone 5G network to ensure uninterrupted connectivity.
The same technology will be applied to the sailing events in Marseille, with Galaxy S24 Ultra devices installed on each competition boat. This setup allows fans to experience the thrill of the races alongside their favorite athletes. Samsung, in partnership with OBS and Orange, has developed solutions to overcome challenges posed by various water bodies and weather conditions, ensuring high-quality video and connectivity.
A New Perspective on Olympic Broadcasting
Yiannis Exarchos, CEO of OBS, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting how Samsung’s latest mobile technology will offer fans an immersive, real-time experience of the Games. The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s optical image stabilization (OIS) and enhanced transmission power will ensure stable, high-quality livestreams, even in difficult conditions.
Samsung’s Continued Olympic Innovation
Samsung’s involvement in the Olympics dates back decades, beginning with the ‘Call Home’ program in 1998, which allowed athletes to contact their families for free. The company continued its contributions with the Wireless Olympic Works (WOW) app, introduced at Athens 2004 and made public at Vancouver 2010, providing real-time updates to fans.
Since Nagano 1998, Samsung has supplied over 120,000 mobile products to athletes and staff, enhancing communication and connectivity during the Games. The Paris 2024 collaboration represents the next phase in Samsung’s commitment to driving digital transformation at the Olympics, with more technological advancements to bring fans closer to the action expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
