In conjunction with World Oceans Day 2024, Canon Marketing Malaysia partnered with Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to host the “Exploring Ocean Awareness Through Photography” workshop and exhibition. This collaborative initiative, part of UMS’s Ocean Celebration 2024, aimed to raise public awareness about marine conservation through the art of photography.

Led by renowned underwater photographer and Canon’s EOS Master, Ipah Uid Lynn, the workshop took place on June 24, 2024, at the Azman Hashim UMS Gallery. Participants from government agencies, NGOs, universities, and the general public attended, learning essential skills for capturing the beauty of Malaysia’s underwater ecosystems. Ipah emphasized responsible photography practices that minimize impact on marine life, fostering a deeper appreciation for the country’s marine biodiversity.

Running alongside the workshop was a photo exhibition featuring stunning underwater images printed by Canon’s imagePROGRAF Pro Series printers. Ipah’s photographs vividly showcased the mesmerizing marine life, serving as a poignant reminder of the importance of ocean conservation and the need to protect these fragile ecosystems.

“At Canon, we believe in the power of imaging to inspire positive change,” stated Calvin Liew, Head of Canon Marketing Malaysia Kota Kinabalu branch. “This initiative aligns with our ‘Kyosei’ philosophy of living and working together for the common good. By equipping participants with photography skills and presenting Ipah’s captivating imagery, we aim to ignite a passion for marine conservation and encourage action to safeguard our oceans.”

The success of the “Exploring Ocean Awareness Through Photography” program underscores Canon’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. It complements Canon Malaysia’s broader initiatives such as the ‘One Canon One Tree’ campaign and tree adoption drives, demonstrating their dedication to fostering a sustainable future through impactful programs and innovative technology.

Speaking at the launch of Ocean Celebration 2024, UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Kasim Hj Mansor, urged the public to prioritize ocean conservation efforts, ensuring a promising future for generations to come.

Canon and BMRI continue to collaborate on initiatives aimed at promoting ocean conservation and inspiring collective responsibility for protecting our planet’s marine ecosystems.
