The Huawei Watch GT4 is part of the launch lineup alongside with it’s non-smartphones, namely their FreeBuds Pro 3 and MatePad 11.5 PaperMatte Edition which aims to complete their ecosystem portfolio in 2023, well unless they have more to come end of this year.

With that said, lets just quickly dive in to the review to see what it has to offer for us and the consumers.

Unboxing Content

The following is what you get upon unboxing the Huawei Watch GT4

  • The Huawei Watch GT4 (of course)
  • Magnetic Charging Cable
  • User Manual

Design and Display

Huawei took the approach of ‘design first with functionality together which from the first looks at it, the fully rounded 1.43 inch AMOLED display is pleasant and colors displayed accurately, yet glancing at it look natural to the eye view too, as if you are not wearing a Smartwatch, looks akin to an actual traditional watch, which can be doubled as an everyday watch at any occasions. The refresh rate is great too, with constant 60FPS when operating with it, we tried to swipe and tap multiple times, and the screen is able to just take on it without hiccups. It has microphone and speaker support which means that you can play music, reply messages via voice and voice commands as well. There is 2 control buttons, one for accessing the menu with the crown dial for scrolling, while another is is quick access to the sports and exercise quick selection modes.

The body of the watch is made of a base metal and plastic, but honestly still carries the looks of an ordinary higher end watches out there, and then there’s the strap, which is interchangeable from Fluoroelastomer Strap (which is the one we got) to a leather strap, or you could just get any compatible strap from any retailer shops or online ecommerce portals. Do take note that the Huawei Watch GT4 is compatible with the 22m straps and it’s aint heavy when wearing it, just weighted at 49 grams with 5ATM water resistance.

On to the variants and color choices, the Huawei Watch GT4 comes in 46mm size (for the gents) and 41mm size (for the ladies) with multiple colors to choose from Black, Brown Green and Grey.

Functions/Apps & Experience

The Huawei Watch GT4 is not too hard to setup, what you need to do is install Huawei AppGallery, from there install Huawei Health and just follow the instruction, sign in or sign up for an account, then enable bluetooth to connect the phone and the watch together, and yes, do remember to also enable all permissions such as location, tracking and file access so that it can sync altogether. If you are specifically using Huawei EMUI powered phones, then thats easy, just install Huawei Health if its not present, and follow the steps, good to go as well.

So these are the following functionalities you can find as below

Petal Maps Support : For navigation and pin on maps (applicable for EMUI based phones only)

Huawei Wallet : Enables Wallet payment functions via NFC tap (available in certain regions)

Period Tracker : Measure Menstrual and set reminders (for the ladies)

Barometer : measure atmospheric pressure

Heart Rate Monitoring (part of TruSeen Vital Monitoring) : Measure heart rates continuously

Sp02/Blood Oxygen (part of TruSeen Vital Monitoring) : Measures blood oxygen

TruSleep Monitoring : Tracks sleeping habits in 3 measurements, deep, light sleep and awake with constant monitoring

Stress Monitoring : Measures Stress levels live and constant mode

Workout mode : Uses GPS to track movement for outdoors, includes basic modes like cycling and climbing, over 15 modes are predefined and can be used indoors and outdoor as well with the built in acceleration sensor with courses plans.

Experience wise, my only feedback is the installation of multiple apps just to connect the watch, but then think of it, pretty understandable since the Watch GT4 is running on HarmonyOS 4 and for the most part, it is still an Android Watch, just not the kind that you can install anything you like, it is all limited to what you have via the AppGallery and Huawei Health App, but it should be more than sufficient for the average joe just by the vanilla mode, as you still can sync all your notifications even replying WhatsApp messages is possible. Workout and health app wise, there is plenty to choose and customize from and the same can be said for the Watch Faces as well, there is just alot to play with to suit the occasions. Battery life wise, it simple can last up to 7 days in normal mode, while setting it to smartwatch only mode can get you almost 14 days, eliminating the need of always charging the watch everyday. Alternatively if you forget to charge, this watch does support wireless charging and it is compatible with most wireless chargers and powerbank out there. Other than that all of the health and sports app functions as intended, with good tracking and accuracy in general and I am satisfied with guides/advice on how to keep your sleep and health in check too.

Verdict & Conclusion

Rating

In conclusion, I find that the Huawei Watch GT4 is highly functional yet bringing some casual and fashion statement to it, although it does lack some of the third party companion apps, one can still benefit from the included functionality and features which matter most for users. With that said, Huawei is still rapidly improving things via patches and updates, along with new enhancements that could just might enhances the usability of the Watch GT4. Overall the Huawei Watch GT4 is now selling from RM1099 I can just easily recommend this for those who is seeking for a full purpose, all rounded OS based driven Smartwatch, plus I find the price pretty ok, especially for those who are used to the Huawei Ecosystem, which this watch makes it a complete companion.
