As anyone looking for a pair of earbuds, many definitely experienced from the absolute budget to the high end ones with many bells and whistles, but but so many feature, that does mean its gonna cost a bomb, that also means many brands has cater towards levels of budget depending on what the consumer wants, and SONY is no exception when comes to that. The SONY WF-C700N is an attempt from SONY in entering the entry level Noise Cancelling earbuds level with some advantages, and compromises to keep the price checked.

Unboxing

The SONY WF-C700N came with the following

  • Charging Case + Pair of earbuds
  • USB A to C Cable
  • Fitting eartips (S and L size)
  • User Manual/User Guide

Design

First off, the looks of the case is not oval or rounded, rather it has a slightly longer shape with no edges, while at the same time because of the shapes, it still retain the compactness of a longer pebble that makes it easier to slide in to the pocket, especially to the jeans lover, this has no issue even tighter pocket ones. I do love the initial looks of it, by holding and picking it up, it feels solid that indeed it does inherits some the premium feel from their higher end Sony earbuds. The overall texture, touch is smooth and not slippery. The weight for each earbuds is 4.6 grams while the case is just weighted at lightweight 31 grams. A button located at the back of the case also allows for re-sync with current or new paired devices.

The SONY WF-C700N comes in choices of four colors, White, Black, Sage Green and Lavender. The color that we will be reviewing the is the Black color, which is the safest color with the earbuds matching same colors to the case. Of course to mention each of the earbuds side has a button which is rounded, big and allows for multiple presses/gesture control to the user’s need.

Performance – Battery and Connectivity

In my experience, the SONY WF-C700N will last roughly 7 hours with ANC ON for a single charge, and recharging using the provided case will give you another 2 to 3 cycles of battery life over your set of earbuds. This provides continuous music listening and gaming with video streaming fun. In terms of charging time, 15 minutes gives you approximately 2 hours of music time, while charging the case took approximately less than 2 hours via the supplied cable, and there is no wireless charging for the case, in any typical normal use cases, a full charge will last anyone approximately 2 days if you are solely using it for music listening and possibly a couple of drama episodes streaming.

Connectivity wise, the SONY WF-C700N is connected via Bluetooth 5.x with backwards compatibility within the Bluetooth 5.x specifications, all you need to do is just turn on the Bluetooth on your phone and scan, open up the charging case take out the Earbuds and place it to your ears, and its connected via a notification on your phone (Android 10 or iOS 11). It’s just that simple. The pair of earbuds will detect each other automatically in stereo mode simultaneously and you can use the Sony Connect App to further configure the earbuds settings and features.

You can also connect up to 2 device at the same time with a combination of a phone and PC/Laptop, as long it is logged in with the same account credential where it will also populate all companion Android devices that you owned, allowing seamless connection across devices that you are carrying along.

Performance – Sound and User/App experience

The SONY WF-C700N comes with several features that is matching some higher end earbuds, performance wise , it allows instant pick and connection is established almost instantaneously, daily usage with the earbuds is close to no latency when streaming via YouTube and Spotify. It does feature include a noise cancellation with voice passthrough which is quite effective when you are outdoor yet you are able to respond to your surrounding awareness, especially useful when someone is crossing or passby vehicle, or when you need to attend to a real life conversations quickly. There is an equalizer setting and prioritization mode that is predefined under the Sony Connect App Sound settings if you need more bass or Treble for your music, analyze ear shape and enabling DSEE. Additionally over settings you have Analyze ear shape, Dynamic Latency and Activity Tracking, while 360 reality audio only has a handful of limited music app such as Tidal or full surround live music experience. The Analyze ear shape is a guide to users on how to properly wear your earbuds and analyses ear sensitiveness so that you can hear every tune clearly. There is no HiRes Audio but it is still standing decently with formats compatible such as AAC, FLAC and MQA.

Call quality is clear with minimal muffles or distortion during normal calls, as well as video calling via Zoom. Music experience wise, keeping it over default settings is good enough over any genre of music, while enable Bass Boost does spice up a lot on heavier bass combo type genre. Other features include IP4 water splash resistance, AAC sound compatibility, Adaptive sound control & manual switch audio route with other compatible devices covering both Smartphones, Tablets & Laptop. During our test, we also found out that the earbuds manage to reach a reasonable average of 80 Decibels which is decently loud and clear .

Conclusion and Rating

Rating

The SONY WF-C700N is a mid tier choice which, most of the features are deem essential for daily use, with no nonsense settings that allows majority of the user to pick up and use straight away, while those who wanted to tune it further, well you can do so to enhance the experience further. While lacking certain advanced features it is still delivering good quality music for most genres with the inclusion of the 5mm drivers that still be able to pack some punch and bang for your buck. Price wise, its RM549 and for that price, it does matches the quality that this model has to deliver.
