Beam reports new records of over 1.1 million e-scooter rides by over 200,000 people in 2022.

As the year 2022 closes in on a conclusion, Beam Mobility, Malaysia’s leading micro-mobility service provider, has set new records in several areas. With new records set in terms of total rides, riders, e-scooter deployments, and more, this signals the arrival of a new era of mobility in our nation that Malaysians have been anticipating.

Beam’s objective since its beginning in Malaysia in 2019 has been to improve city traffic while also reducing carbon emissions. Despite the fact that much work remains to be done, Malaysia is moving in the right path to make this a reality, owing to the support of people and riders.

Beam Ridership & Deployment in 2022

Beam added almost 80,000 additional signups throughout the course of the previous year, increasing the overall number of riders by 65% from 2021. This demonstrates that Malaysians still view e-scooters as cutting-edge, alternative modes of transportation, particularly for the first and last mile.

To elaborate, over one million journeys were made in 2022, a 2.5x increase over the previous year in 2021. Furthermore, nearly 100,000 of those travels were to or from a public transit facility such as an MRT, LRT, or bus station, representing a stunning 5x increase over the previous year when the workforce returns to the office following COVID-19 lockdowns. This clearly demonstrates that Malaysians are becoming more aware of and accepting of Beam’s e-scooters as an efficient mode of first and last-mile transportation to finish their journeys.

Over the past year, Beam has also been scaling up the deployment of new e-scooters in key areas throughout the nation. Over 3,500 e-scooters have been deployed throughout Peninsular Malaysia, including Perak, Pahang, Johor, and a broader coverage in Klang Valley, including districts such as Mont Kiara, Bandar Utama, Ara Damansara, Cheras, and others. With a larger fleet, more Malaysians can experience efficient transportation while also having fun.

While riding e-scooters benefits users’ financial, physical, and mental health, it also benefits our environment. Malaysians will have travelled over two million kilometres in 2022 utilising Beam e-scooters instead of cars. This implies that more than 486 tonnes of carbon emissions would have been avoided if those travels had been done in a regular car!

“The data clearly shows that an increasing number of Malaysians are more accepting of shared e-scooters as a real mode of transport. I would like to thank all our riders for the constant support and constructive feedback over the past year. As we head into the new year, let’s carry this momentum forward and work towards realizing the dream of creating a city that flows smoothly,”

Looking Ahead to 2023

Beam’s success originates from cities’ trust in them to provide a green transportation mode other than traditional car models. Beam is thankful to the municipal councils of Shah Alam (Selangor), Petaling Jaya (Selangor), Ampang Jaya (Selangor), and Kuantan (Pahang) who share their vision of a low-carbon city powered by smart mobility.

Beam has also heard of universities’ woes as student enrollments increase, causing a shortage of parking places. Their partners Universiti Sains Malaysia (Penang), Universiti Teknologi MARA Seri Iskandar (UiTM Perak), and EduCity Iskandar (Johor) have noticed the great effect they have made on the livelihood within campuses.

“Our positive performance can be simply attributed to hearing the negative experiences of public transport riders when completing the first and last mile portion of their journey and creating a solution that prioritizes safety by combining industry-leading hardware and software. We hope to work closely with authorities and other service providers to establish a more enhanced public transport network in Malaysia”
