AMD has released a small preview of the 2023 mobile processor family, as well as a look at the new naming system AMD created to support these various processors.
The New System
AMD’s 2023+ mobile processors will all be branded with the new system you mentioned above. Each digit stands for something. For example, if you see an AMD Ryzen xx4x processor, you’re looking at a chip with “Zen 4” inside. It’s “Zen 3” if you see a processor with AMD Ryzen xx30. And Ryzen xx35 is a “Zen 3+” processor. If the processor begins with a “7xxx,” you’re looking at a current product from AMD’s 2023 portfolio. If you don’t understand what’s inside a processor, a higher number simply means more CPU performance. As an example, the decoder ring is mapped to a hypothetical Ryzen 5 7640U.
AMD’s 2023 and beyond Series Naming
According to AMD, the naming system will apply to future planned products. AMD expects to enter five different market/buying segments in 2023, using five different SOCs. According to the matrix above, it will be a mix of all-new design wins and refreshed 2022 systems, depending on the laptop builder’s preferences. Importantly, all products fall under the AMD Ryzen 7000 umbrella, and each CPU architecture is limited to a single series.
The new system will give everyone a better understanding of what’s inside AMD processors, as well as the significance of model numbering.
