- Baju Kurung searched close to 3.3 million times during Ramadan 2021
With recent lockdowns changing the way we purchase, Shopee’s Ramadan month data demonstrates that Malaysians have gotten more intuitive when it comes to online shopping between 2019 and 2021.
Shopee has seen a rise in searches for items across all categories on the platform during the Ramadan month in the last three years, due to technological advancements and how Ramadan shopping has become much more digital.
During the Ramadan season of 2021, the keyword Baju Kurung was searched over 3.3 million times. In comparison to the same period in 2020, this was a 433% raise. The keyword got popular by 265% during the Ramadan month of 2020, compared to the same period the previous year.
The keyword foundation was searched more than 90,000 times on Shopee in the health and beauty area, a huge rise over the 28,000 times it was searched in 2019. The number of times a keyword was searched increased to over 197,000 in 2021. This demonstrates that many people who observe Ramadan continue to buy products that help them look their best during Raya family photo sessions.
Meanwhile, the search for Kuih Raya increased to 253,603 times during Ramadan last year from 58,331 times in 2020 as Kuih Raya is one of the must-haves in the household of Malaysians who celebrate the occasion and hand out as gifts to their family and friends.
Vehicle accessories such as helmets, engine oil, wipers, oil filter, and car wax were also popular online. For instance, during Ramadan 2020, the phrase wiper was searched 8,365 times because hardware and spare part stores were only allowed to open for a limited number of hours due to the Movement Control Order (MCO). It was searched over 27,000 times throughout Ramadan last year.
Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing Campaigns at Shopee Malaysia said that the lockdowns had trained Malaysians to be accustomed to e-commerce and that Shopee has now become the go-to platform to get their Ramadan essentials which were previously purchased offline.
“Take for instance there was a surge in sales for ketupat palas, BB Cream and concealers during Ramadan 2021. These are popular items which users used to purchase them offline. However, last year, these became the most sold items online within their product categories.”
