Introduction

Tablet has been a norm these days, especially since we live in an era where it is considered as one of the important tools for work, play, entertainment and education. Tablet is also one of the source where someone game with it, unleash creativities and mostly just to get things done fast and efficient.

Today we will look at the Xiaomi Pad 5, a mid budget tablet that is meant to fit most categories, be it for work, play or just to draw something out

Design

The Xiaomi Pad 5 back is built almost entirely on a smooth plastic combining colors into it that gave a different standout feeling compared to others, which gave an impression of a creativity use. Looking on top of the back the tablet comes equipped with a single 13MP camera lens with dual LED flash. Touching the back portion of the tablet gives a smooth texture to it, and don’t worry, not a fingerprint magnet. Over at the front screen of the tablet there’s one selfie camera at 8MP for video use, or just to snap selfies. Overall sides of the tablet is made out of silver metal which further strengthen the structure of the tablet. It comes in 2 colors, Pearl White and Cosmic Gray.

The bottom of the tablet you will spot two speaker, one USB C port and a microphone. Over the top you will spot another pair speaker placement and the power button. Specifically on the speaker, when playing music, streaming or games, both bottom firing speakers and the top speaker will work together, giving it a quad speaker experience surrounding it powered by Dolby Atmos. Over the left side there is a 3 Pin magnetic connector to connect the optional Keyboard while on the right hand side you will spot two additional microphone, another magnetic attachment to charge the Xiaomi Pen paired via Bluetooth and a pair of volume button .

Display

Over the display front, the Xiaomi Pad 5 features an 11 Inch LCD screen that carries a resolution of 1600 x 2560 WQHD+ display up to 120Hz with support from Dolby Vision. Display came out excellent with good contrast, color reproduction and great clarity to it. The display also supports brightness up to 500nits and Xiaomi Pen support for writing and drawing. Such displays will work great when it comes to gaming, normal streaming, email replies, social media, study use, drawing, writing, video conferencing and as an e-reader. 

Camera

The Xiaomi Pad 5 comes equipped with 2 cameras, One 13MP camera with dual LED flash on the rear and one 8MP on the front. The rear camera produces shots what it should be, with normal contrast, normal average color accuracy and produces fairly good details at the same time. Over to the selfie camera side, do not expect great pictures, however it does the job well as a front camera as a webcam for video conferencing and online learning. Below are the samples of various environments taken. Rear camera wise over video mode, it can capture up to 1080P at 30FPS

Performance

The Xiaomi Pad 5 is considered a higher mid range tablet that is considerable as a value for money tablet. It comes equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 860 Octa Core processor with 6GB RAM, 128GB or 256GB storage with no MicroSD card expansion. Overall performance is exceptionally well with a few benchmarks and games thrown into it, produces remarkable results and overall high setting running on the tablet. Rest assured games that can run over 60FPS will just goes up 120FPS over selected titles with the right graphical settings. If you wish to use it with the Xiaomi Pen, it will be a great choice for all your scribbling needs. The Xiaomi Pad 5 is powered by MIUI 12.5 with Android 11, providing the latest updates and security patches. Currently the Xiaomi Pen is selling for RM299 as an accessory and it is not included in the box.

Over to the gaming side, the tablet performs very well with no stutters detected so far on games such as Mobile Legends and Genshin Impact. We have listed a number of games that we tested run well with it. Be sure to also check other games that supports high refresh rate to take advantage of the 120Hz screen and the Adreno GPU.

Benchmark performance meets the best you can get from a tablet, delivering mid high tier performance as shown below. Such a score is greatly appreciated as a work life balance device on a tablet. Going over multi tasking is not a problem at all for this segment

Battery performance wise, you will get up to 9 hours of it, a mix of video calls, surfing, email, streaming, and a few Mobile Legends matches and Asphalt 9 . Turning on the battery saving mode under 20% will get you around extra 3 hours of conservative usage. The Xiaomi Pad 5 comes with a 33w charger which will roughly charge up to 100% in about 4 hours time frame. On paper specs there is no indication whether higher power chargers will be supported, but perhaps they could have it supported via firmware update.

Conclusion 

The Xiaomi Pad 5 is one tablet we do recommend, suited for those who is new to the tablet, an enthusiast that wanted to have some serious work and gaming on it, or someone creative that wanted an alternative over to Apple’s iPad with the support of the optional Xiaomi Pen that does the same job as the Apple Pencil. Another HUGE advantage of the Xiaomi Pen is that its support wireless charging by just docking over to the tablet. The Xiaomi Pad 5 is currently selling at RM1399 for the 128GB storage model while the 256GB storage variant sells for RM1599 at all Xiaomi retail and online stores.
